Observer — You Did It Again!

Remember some time ago I had to break up some concrete to get to a broken main? Actually my wife got more fun out of the 20 lb. sledge than I did, she actually scared me! That concrete was at least 4 inches thick, and I couldn’t get it away from her!

Anyway, I talked about bringing it into the office and saw some exercises on internet that looked pretty interesting, They were fun too, but I almost clocked a bookkeeper with it and decided I’d get something a little safer — a little less radius!

Observer mentioned it was similar to kettlebells. Hadn’t thought much about them, never trained with them — always did power lifting or olympic lifting for Track & Field and Football.

I was in Big 5 the other day and picked up a set of 35 lb’ers (15 kg). They were cheaper and better looking than those on internet and with shipping — forgetaboutit! (hint: don’t buy weights on internet…..shipping will KILL you! You see……they are……HEAVY! :D

I used to throw the 35 lb weight in college and I swear these 35 lb. kettlebells remind me of that! I love them! I do tri’s, bi’s, cleans, presses, etc. They even came with a CD and there are a lot of swinging movements that mirror oly lifting and throwing the weight. Great for core, legs, glutes, arms…….

So I took it out back and challenged the 300 lb. boy to see who could throw it farthest. He has benched something like 460 so he was sure he could easily beat dear ol dad. Especially in the lousy shape I’m in right now.

He tried to throw it from the side first. Didn’t get much leg into it. I took a turn and got both legs into it by swinging it (like one of my exercises between my legs, but then cleaning it back overhead and throwing it behind me high over head. I know about the 45 degree angle theory for optimal distance and of course he did not. I nearly doubled his throws. Then came the jack acid test. I started with one spin (heel toe like hammer) then two, then three. When I got the hang of it I could easily throw it twice as far as the boy.

I told him its not about strength. Its about technique. Think about it.

Anyway, I love those kettlebells (The Ruskies do too) and gotta hand it to Obs — he did it again!

Now I’m waiting to get a pair of 50 pounders!
