History of socialism as a force in the Middle East

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
What are some good books on this? It’s to counter this bullshit I hear a lot from a few identity politics-crazed NZ Muslim anti-Zionist and anti-imperialist campaigners that socialists are just imposing their Western secular worldview on Middle Easterners, who are obviously all inherently theocratic (). Led Zeppelin has had a bit of experience arguing with one of them on my Facebook when the Iranian Uprisings were happening. Particularly I’m interested in learning about the rise of Islamic fundamentalism as a force that largely replaced secular Arab nationalist and socialist ideologies in terms of popularity.

Bil’in, Jerusalem, Ma’asara, Ni’ilin, Saffa, Tel Aviv
This week joint struggle was focused on the new wave of the High school seniors refusniks. Both in Tel Aviv demo, the various activities connected with the arrests of the first two - Efi and Or, and in the Friday joint demonstrations at Bil’in, Ni’ilin, and Ma’asara. During the week the focus was on joining the olive picking struggles of the Saffa villagers, and the staying at nights in Bil’in - to help in the confrontation with Israel state forces persecuting the village activists who participate in the struggle against the separation fence. This week, the spectrum of struggles included also usual the activities against the transfer in East Jerusalem and the Israeli Bedouins of the south, and the struggles supporting the Guest workers and resisting the transfer of their children. Bil’in, Gerusalemme, Ma’asara, Ni’ilin, Saffa, Tel Aviv

Hello

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
Hello! I’m a high school student from West Virginia (I hope that isn’t too personal).

If there is any place in America to see the courage and determination the common worker must find within him/herself everyday in order to face the exploitation, the danger, the injustice - it is here in the land of coal mines and chemical plants. Unfortunately, the leftist movement here is weak compared to its potential. Such is being a Southern, conservative state.

About me, I am a Communist. I don’t follow any certain rigid school, but Trotskyism does appeal to me the most. I became a Communist as I started researching politics more in depth. Naturally, with my surroundings and also some more personal stories that influenced my politics, I became a Communist.

Anyhow, hello! It’s nice to finally find a left-wing community, very refreshing.

Providism

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
Hello comrades, I wanted to see what your opinion on this new idea i came up with. I call it Providism, from the word, "provide".

So here’s the basics of my idea; The state provides housing, food, water, electricity, etc., etc., pretty much the basic needs. So now, people don’t have to work to survive, to live. All the people would have to work for, is the luxuries, the "wants", and taxes. These would be, for example, a new plasma screen, or a new car, or a fancy lobster dinner, or whatever. Taxes would be paid to be used for the people, not for useless reasons. I mean its not like we don’t pay taxes already, and that’s without having basic needs provided for!

So this new system would pretty much on its own eliminate poverty, starvation, and maybe even social classes, and still keep people’s freedom to start their own businesses and stuff like that alive.:thumbup1:
