Tuesday, October 6th, 2009APF Statement on the Recent Attacks on Abahlali baseMjondolo in Kennedy Road, Durban
The first few months of the Zuma Presidency has not interrupted the war on the poor. What took place last week in Kennedy Road, Durban, is rather signalling that the violence deployed against organisations of the poor is being escalated. A meeting of the Abahlali baseMjondolo (ABM) affiliate, Kennedy Road Development Committee (KRDC), on Sunday September 27th , was attacked by a militia, killing comrades Mthokozisi Ndlovu and Ndumiso Mnguni. The office of Abahlali and fifteen homes belonging to leading members of the movement were demolished before the attack and several of the ABM’s leaders remain in hiding. Over a thousand, mostly Xhosa-speaking residents, were also forced to flee their homes.

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009Dear activists, Taking place last year in Winterthur and this year in Biel/Bienne, the second anarchist book convention will be held in May 2010. The city being situated on the linguistic border, we, therefore, have more possibilities offered to us when it comes to the organization of this event. More than changing city, the idea is to widen the concept. We are planning, aside from the presentation of dozens of publishers, libraries, distributors and organisations, multiple cultural and political activities in different wonderful places of this small town, located in between the verdant Jura and the glistening lake. What hatched in Winterthur can now grow in Biel/Bienne; a multilingual convention aiming to be a meeting point for anarchists from all over central Europe, and …

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009Zapatistas Face Attack By Jake Carman —- Last month, Mexican paramilitaries stepped up attacks on Zapatista farmers and communities. On September 1st, 150 members of right wing factions of the splintered Rural Association of Collective Interest (ARIC), the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the Organization for the Defense of Indigenous and Campesino Rights (OPDDIC) attacked 60 Zapatista farmers with machetes, clubs and guns. The attack, which resulted in 1 ARIC death and 8 ARIC injuries, occurred in the Las Tazas Canyon on a plot of land called Casa Blanca. Zapatistas claimed the land in their 1994 uprising, and indigenous farmers who have worked it ever since recently constructed homes in the area. —- The Zapatistas suffered eight injuries. Tuesday, October 6th, 2009On October 1st, 2009, at 6:00am, the Joint Terrorism Task Force (a union of local police departments and the FBI), kicked out the front door to our home?an anarchist collective house in Queens, NY, affectionately known as Tortuga. The first crashes of the battering ram were quickly followed by more upstairs, as the police broke in on 3 sleeping people, destroying bedroom doors that were unlocked. Three more people, awoken by the most unpleasant means of bounding footsteps, splintering wood, and shouting voices, waited in the basement?their turn at drawn guns and blinding lights came quickly. —- We put our hands out where they could see them. They ordered us out of bed. They wouldn?t let us dress, but they did put a random assortment of clothes on some people. …
